Contra Costa County Beekeeping Regulations

Bees may only be kept in an agricultural or open space zoning district and with a permit from the Animal Control Supervisor.

No accessory building or structure housing animals, grain-fed rodents, bees, birds or poultry shall be located nearer than fifty feet of any residential land use district or main building on an adjacent lot;

"...It shall also be unlawful to keep, maintain, posses or harbor on any property within the City, any apiary,…"

6,000sqft minimum lot size. Must be registered according to FAC. See Ordinance for further regulations.

Permitted with various requirements according to Zoning. A-1, A-2, A-4 agricultural zones allow for apiaries. See municipal code for futher requirements according to zone where an apiary could be placed.

In the City of Hercules, there are no municipal codes set in place for the ownership of apiaries.

Apiaries shall be registered with the Contra Costa County agricultural commissioner and the town of Moraga planning department; Beekeeping may occur on parcels within the 1-DUA, 2-DUA, 3-DUA, 6-DUA, study, institutional, MOSO or non-MOSO open space zoning districts as accessory to an existing permitted single-family residence, duplex, triplex or fourplex, subject to the standards, requirements and regulations set forth in this section

Hives may only be maintained in the single-family or agricultural districts, not in multi-family or mobile home districts. See municipal code for further regulations.

Minimum lot size: twenty thousand square feet

In the City of Pleasant Hill, there are no municipal codes set in place for the ownership of apiaries.

Beekeeping defined as "Urban Agriculture." Urban Agriculture activities shall comply with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, or regulations

It is unlawful for any person, firm or corporation to keep bees or maintain an apiary within the city.

In the City of San Ramon, there are no municipal codes set in place for the ownership of apiaries.

D. Agricultural Use Classifications. 1. Animal Husbandry. Raising of animals or production of animal products, such as eggs or dairy products, on an agricultural or commercial basis. Typical uses include grazing, ranching, dairy farming, poultry farming, and beekeeping but exclude slaughter houses.
