Privacy Policy
Last updated: March 25, 2026
ColonyTrack is built by a beekeeper, not a data company. We collect what we need to
make the app work and nothing more. This policy explains exactly what that means.
What we collect
- Account info: Email address and name when you sign up. We use this for authentication and to contact you about your account.
- Hive data: Inspections, notes, photos, and hive records you create in the app. This is your data. We store it so you can access it.
- Location data: With your permission, the app uses your device's GPS to pin an apiary on the map and to tag inspections with the coordinates where you stood. You can drop the pin manually instead, and the app still works if you deny location access. Separately, we use your coarse region (from your IP address) for region-specific guidance such as Africanized-bee warnings and seasonal recommendations. Your precise coordinates stay on your own hive records, support anonymized bee health research only in aggregate, and are never used to track you across other apps or websites.
- Usage data: On the marketing site (colonytrack.app), with your consent, we use Google Analytics 4 to count page views and understand which pages are useful. IP addresses are anonymised and we do not link analytics to any other Google product. In the app, we use Sentry to capture error and crash reports (which include your account identifier) so we can fix bugs. We do not run product analytics or behavioural tracking in the app. We do not track you across other websites and we do not run advertising trackers anywhere.
- Payment info: If you subscribe to a paid plan on the web, payment is processed by Stripe. On the iOS app, payment is processed by Apple through the App Store; on Android, by Google through Google Play. RevenueCat manages our subscription records across those platforms. In every case, we never see or store your full card number.
What we never do
- We never sell your data to anyone. Not advertisers, not data brokers, not other companies. Ever.
- We never share your individual data with third parties for commercial purposes.
- We never use your data for targeted advertising. There are no ads in ColonyTrack.
Research and bee health
We believe beekeeping data can help the broader community. If we ever share data with
researchers (universities, USDA, bee health organizations), it will be:
- Anonymized: no individual beekeeper can be identified
- Aggregated: trends and patterns, not individual records
- For conservation and science only: never commercial
We will always be transparent about any data sharing and will notify users before it happens.
Your data is yours
Every beekeeper, free or paid, can export their hive data at any time as a CSV file.
No hoops, no paywalls on your own records. If you delete your account, we delete your data.
Data storage and security
- Your data is stored on encrypted servers.
- All connections use HTTPS encryption.
- We use industry-standard security practices to protect your information.
- Photos are stored in Cloudflare R2 with access limited to your account.
- We use Sentry to monitor errors and crashes so we can fix bugs quickly. Error reports contain technical details (route, error message, browser info) but do not include your hive data.
Cookies
We use essential cookies for authentication (keeping you signed in to the app). On
the marketing site, Google Analytics 4 only loads after you click Accept
on the cookie banner. You can reject analytics at any time. We do not use advertising
or remarketing cookies anywhere. See our
cookie policy
for the full list and how to control them.
Children's privacy
ColonyTrack is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information
from children under 13. If you believe we have, please contact us and we will delete it.
Changes to this policy
If we make significant changes to this policy, we'll notify you via email or a notice in the app.
Minor clarifications may be made without notice.
