Thinking about keeping bees?

You don't need an app yet. You need a plan. ColonyTrack's beginner journey starts 3-6 months before your bees arrive, so when they show up, you're ready.

1

Planning to start

Decided to keep bees? ColonyTrack helps you build a timeline: when to order bees, what equipment to get (and what to skip), where to find a local mentor or bee club, and how to set up your first hive location. Our gear guide walks you through everything based on your budget and climate.

2

First year beekeeper

Bees are here. Now what? ColonyTrack becomes your field partner. Goal-driven inspections walk you through what to look for. Voice-assisted dictation lets you capture notes without taking off your gloves. The knowledge base is always a tap away when you see something you don't recognize.

3

Growing with experience

As you gain confidence, ColonyTrack grows with you. Track multiple hives, compare performance, manage varroa treatments with smart timing, and build a history that makes you a better beekeeper each season. Your data tells a story. We help you read it.

Join a bee club first.

Seriously. The single best thing you can do as a new beekeeper is find your local beekeeping association and show up. A mentor who can look at your frames with you is worth more than any app. ColonyTrack is here to complement that, not replace it.

Common Questions

How much does it cost to start beekeeping?
Budget $300-500 for your first year: a hive setup ($150-200), protective gear ($80-120), tools ($30-50), and bees ($150-200 for a nucleus colony). You can spend more, but you don't need to. Our gear guide helps you prioritize.
When should I order bees?
In most of the US, order in December-January for spring delivery (April-May). Packages and nucs sell out fast. Your local bee club is the best source for timing specific to your area.
Do I need a big yard?
A standard Langstroth hive takes about 4 square feet. You need a few feet of clear space in front for the flight path, and somewhere you won't bother neighbors. Many urban beekeepers keep hives on rooftops or small backyards. Check your local ordinances.
Will I get stung?
Yes. It comes with the territory. Good protective gear and calm, deliberate movements reduce stings dramatically. Most beekeepers get stung a few times a season. If you're allergic to bee stings, talk to an allergist before starting.
Is ColonyTrack free for beginners?
Yes, the free tier covers up to 2 hives with full QR scanning, voice-assisted dictation, inspections, knowledge base, and the beginner journey. That's enough for most first-year beekeepers. No credit card required, no time limit.
